East Meets West
East Meets West is a series of works that place fluid curvilinear calligraphic forms of Chinese and Japanese Kanji characters in relationship with Post-Modern Hard edge geometric forms. Each character is a representation of a word or concept that is seminal to Zen Buddhist or Taoist practice. The hard edge background is a scaffold upon which the Kanji character establishes a dynamic juxtaposition between two symbolic forms. One a highly structured organized field, while the other a fluid sensual form. The intention of these paintings is to present to the viewer a visual “Koan”. They are an expression of a fundamental cosmic unity: a non-duality. “Not one and not two.”
